BGI was founded in 1999 with the vision of using genomics to benefit mankind and has since become the largest genomic organization in the world. With a focus on research and applications in the healthcare, agriculture, conservation, and environmental fields, BGI has a proven track record of innovative, high profile research, which has generated over 2,137 publications, many in top-tier journals such as Nature and Science.

BGI is headquartered in Shenzhen, China, with branches and medical laboratories in major cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Wuhan, Shanghai and Guangzhou. BGI also has offices and laboratories located in Europe, North America and the Asia Pacific region. BGI currently operates in more than 100 countries and regions and works with more than 3000 medical institutions and more than 300 hospitals.

BGI’s mission is to leverage its genomics expertise in order to advance life science research and improve human health for the benefit of mankind. BGI has particular strengths in prenatal screening, hereditary cancer screening, testing for rare disease and in aiding precision medicine research and initiatives. BGI Genomics provides a wide range of next generation sequencing services and a broad portfolio of genetic tests for medical institutions, research institutions and other public and private partners. Numerous scientific partners, healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies have come to rely on BGI’s world leading bio-informatics research and development, large scale computing infrastructure for data output and storage, and proprietary sequencing platforms.

As a leading biotechnology organization, BGI attempts to provide innovative biological research and application services, on an international level, to researchers and diagnosticians as well as ordinary people. In order to support dedicated efforts to promote applications in different fields, nine sub-organizations of BGI were spawned in 2012.
