Lifescience Researchborder

The life sciences comprise the fields of science that involve the scientific study of living organisms, such as microorganisms, plants, animals and human beings, as well as related considerations like bioethics. While biology remains the centerpiece of the life sciences, technological advances in molecular biology and biotechnology have led to a burgeoning of specializations and new, often interdisciplinary fields. Life Sciences are helpful in improving the quality and standard of Life. It has applications in health, agriculture, medicine, pharmaceutical industry and food science industry.

Life sciences organizations face the challenge of converting great discoveries and research breakthroughs into public acceptance and market success. For companies specializing in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical products and technology and medical devices, the life sciences are changing at a remarkable rate.

Life sciences research occurs in an increasingly interdisciplinary and international environment. Now, when research in the life sciences is considered, computational biology, systems biology, nanotechnology, and synthetic biology are at the forefront of such discussions. These fields blend biology—from whole organism biology to microbiology—with computer science, the physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

In response to the national needs of the State of Qatar, Qatar Foundation has set forth an ambitious vision of Life Science research and its benefits. Qatar Foundation envisions its research as a catalyst for expanding and diversifying the country’s economy, enhancing the education of its citizens and the training of its workforce, and fostering improvements in the health, well-being, environment, and security of its own people and those of the region.

Qatar is firmly committed to research and development as a key part of its National Vision for a knowledge-based economy. We are at a very exciting juncture, having channeled our ambition into a clear, inclusive and flexible strategy to produce a supportive yet adaptable R&D culture based on the highest international standards. Qatar’s National Research Strategy is inspired by local needs and its core objectives involve working together with our national stakeholders, forging international partnerships and enabling knowledge transfer. Through world-class research infrastructure, strong and progressive research programs, and the development of exceptional human capital, it is our aim to place Qatar on the map as a leading center for research and development excellence and innovation. Ultimately, Qatar’s cumulative R&D endeavor is aimed at enhancing the well-being of its people as it makes a worldwide impact.

Biomedical research is undergoing tremendous change, thanks to advances in high throughput analysis, biomedical engineering, stem cells and gene therapy breakthrough biomedical research now can be conducted more effectively in a multidisciplinary set-up, at any time, and is not confined to one physical laboratory or community. The hallmark of this new global research model is collaboration—scientists forming partnerships based on research interests, rather than physical locations. It is a model well-suited to the State of Qatar, which is physically small, but large in talent, ambition, and resources.

Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) exemplifies the global research model by forming partnerships with leading biomedical centers within Qatar and around the world, whether academic or industrial (biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies). The need for such research is great. The last few decades have witnessed a rapid increase in the prevalence of chronic and severe diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. These diseases, which have devastating health and economic consequences, pose a serious threat to public health in Qatar and throughout the Middle East. The situation calls for urgent preventive, early detection strategies and effective therapies.
